HETH HAVEN, Inc. is a privately
operated, privately funded rescue center that takes
in orphaned and/or injured small mammals for
rehabilitation and release back into the wild. We
also network with other rehabilitators all over
Georgia for consultation and transport needs. Some
rehabilitators specialize in one or a few species,
in which case animals may be transferred where they
will get the best care.
When an animal is received, it is checked for
injury, level of hydration, general health condition
and parasites. All this information is documented
along with weight, temperature, gender and estimated
age.
Rescued Raccoons
Our needs as “rehabbers” are many and varied,
beginning with portable cages for
the smallest and youngest animals. We also use puppy
and kitten formulas, antibiotics, first aid
supplies, wormers, flea drops, flannel blankets,
hydrating fluid, assorted bottles and cereal, as
well as appropriately sized bowls that don’t tip
over easily. Anything we are not qualified to treat
means a trip to the veterinarian’s office. We are
fortunate enough to have wonderful veterinarians who
work with us on treatment and consultation for our
wildlife as well as our pets.
As the animals grow older, they are transferred to
outside housing in preparation for release. This
consists of large outdoor pens constructed of lumber
and hardware cloth for the raccoons. We have smaller
housing with smaller wire for squirrels, rabbits and
opossums. Each cage has appropriate toys, nesting
boxes, bedding and climbing apparatus (if needed)
for each species. For bedding we use pine straw
and/or hay. At this age their needs change to “grown
up” food, such as dry chow, meats, fresh fruits and
vegetables and nuts. We also vaccinate before
release.
Wildlife rehabilitation is an intense, expensive but
very rewarding avocation. It is certainly not for
everyone. We received a series of pre-exposure
rabies shots ourselves in order to do this work. It
was one of our biggest startup expenses. The number
of animals we receive each year grows as people
become aware of who we are and what we do.
We really miss our patients/friends once they have
been released, but know that
they are much better off living free. They have an
opportunity they wouldn’t have had if someone hadn’t
cared enough to call us. We thank all of you who
have been caring enough to call and those who have
donated blankets, food, funds and other items. And
of course we are grateful also to those who support
us spiritually. We can’t save them all, but we can
save many who otherwise would certainly die for lack
of some food and care.
We urgently need your
help! Please consider supporting our wildlife and
our efforts. Heth haven, Inc. qualifies as a
recipient of tax deductable donations as a qualified
Public Charity under Section 501(c)(3)of the
Internal revenue Code, and recognized by Georgia as
a Domestic Non-Profit Corporation.
Our primary efforts are targeted towards raccoons, opossums, bunnies and squirrels (tree squirrels, flying squirrels).
We are located in Glynn County, Georgia along the coast and are part of a state-wide effort to help rescue, rehabilitate and release wildlife. There are many concerned individuals throughout our state who work with wildlife. Some work with birds, some with carnivores, some with mammals. We all need and appreciate your support. We thank you.
